The Significance of Western Urban and Rural Movement to China's Urbanization

Abstract: The urban-rural relationship is a fundamental issue that affects China's economic development and social stability. Coordinatedness between urban and rural economic and social development not only has an effect on the speed and quality of the current urbanization development, but is directly related to the sound resolution of issues concerning agriculture, rural areas and farmers, and to the smooth progress of modernization. The "Thirteenth Five-Year Plan" period is an important turning point whereby the new urbanization development changes from speed-oriented mode to quality-oriented mode. However, the urban-rural relationship in China is still far below the ideal state. This article reviews the characteristics of and course of thought concerning urban and rural movements in the Western developed countries, summarizes the measures and experience of developed countries with respect to the transformation of urban-rural relationship and the connection between cities and the countryside, and provides five pieces of advice, in the hope to be helpful to the new countryside development in China.
